KAHUTANDO. This name is a combination of two words, the first being a Maori word from New Zealand ‘Kahuku’, which means chrysalis in the sense of growing/ evolving like a monarch butterfly Spends two weeks as a caterpillar, two weeks as a chrysalis and two months as a butterfly, and an isiXhosa word from Africa- ‘Thando’ which means love.
Logo Requirements
We require a logo that represents the purpose of the organisation as outlined in the introduction above. Ideally the logo would reflect spiritual elements from the Maori and Xhosa cultures (refer to attached Koru to give you an idea of a Maori element). This logo will be used to represent the company.
Who is the target market?
• Programme participants: Township Youth aged 5-36 who live below the poverty line, have poor access to education, employment, health services and adequate shelter facilities. Regardless of poverty these individuals retain a very strong sense of community and helping each other. They are youth who need to learn that they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it and be encouraged to grow their belief in themselves. Some of these youngsters suffer from locked in mentality and do not believe that there is a way out of the townships. They are hungry for fun and recreation and have no facilities to provide this outlet.
• Funders: All ages, Private, national and international, governments, companies and individuals who are looking to improve the conditions in townships in South Africa or a similar third world setting. Part of their consideration in investing in a Non profit is whether the organisation is professional, reputable, trustworthy, and sustainable inline with their values and ethics.
• Volunteers: All ages with positive life experiences and skills to help Kahuthando grow. Again, part of their consideration in investing in a Non profit is whether the organisation is professional, reputable, trustworthy, sustainable and inline with their values and ethics.
• Parents of participants and community members:
What are the specifications?
• The logo is going to be used on the web, business cards, stationery and on a car
• The Kahuthando name should appear on or with the Logo
• Ideas that could be incoproated into the logo include the Maori spiritual element of the Koru. Koru: The spiral is a Koru, represents the fern frond as it opens bringing new life and purity to the world. It also represents peace, tranquillity and spirituality along with a strong sense of regrowth or new beginnings. The Koru is also often associated with nurturing so when interlocked with others is frequently used to represent the strength and purity of a loving relationship within a family.
The pictures below show a Koru. The first picture is a traditional Koru, the second is a greenstone Koru, the third two Koru’s together to make a heart. One idea that might work is using the shiny green colour of the greenstone Koru in the shape of a heart like the third picture therefore covering both Kahuku and Thando.
• Colours: prefer the greenstone colour and shine
• Format: ideally the logo would be supplied digitally in various file formats with the following information supplied: fonts used, exact CMYK and or RGB colours used
What is the time scale / deadline?
